Since the wolf's return to the Netherlands in 2015, the animal has become impossible to ignore in public debate. In the exhibition LUPUS, Dat Bolwerck examines how the wolf has grown into a powerful cultural and political symbol — a carrier of collective fears, desires, and conflicts. What does our gaze upon the wolf actually say about ourselves?
With work by (inter)national artists such as Eric Giraudet de Boudemange, Femke Herregraven, Jan Kopp, Josefin Arnell, Michael John Whelan, Eva Delville, and Katja Novitskova, LUPUS unfolds as a layered story about being human. At a time when themes such as polarization, xenophobia, and security dominate public debate, the exhibition reveals how deeply rooted ideas attach themselves to images of the unknown and "the other."
